Summer has seemed to escape me- can’t believe it’s already September. Kids are preparing for school, the leaves are starting to turn, nights are cooler, and here in Seattle it’s beginning to grey. Luckily we have these beautiful arrangements from Neesha at Fleurish. Her bouquets are exquisite.
They make the grey ok.

Here is a piece that made it into the Bergdorf Goodman Spring 09 catalog. This necklace has a big Phantom Crystal Pendant- which is a crystal that grows within another crystal. Each one is different from the other- totally organic and so amazing.

Hi again!
I know it’s been a while- the jewels and I have been traveling and I’m glad to be back home- at least for a little while. The weather here has been perfect- sunny and 70 degrees. The birds are chirpping, the bees are buzzing and the farmers markets are filling up with beautiful produce and flowers. It’s great to be in the Pacific Northwest.
I thought I’d share one of my new favorites at the moment. It’s a modern take on a locket. It feels like something from grandma’s jewelry box that can be admired and touched by the wearer. I’ve been making these long necklaces using mixed metals for a more interesting layered look. It’s a lot of fun to wear.

Here are two ways to wear the locket- long and as a lariat.

Come check them out at our next trunk show.

The warmer temperatures and the sweetly scented air have me in the garden with my hands in the dirt enjoying the sun and earth. This time of year is so exciting with the promise of sunnier days, growth, and regeneration. This energy is palpable in the studio right now as we are getting ready for a May market. The fertility of spring has me blooming with fresh ideas full of color and life. I’m really excited about these beauties! These are ’surface cut’ gemstones- where the natural texture of the gem is kept as it is found from the earth.

The rough and uneven surface gives these gemstones so much play in color with such an interesting texture that it only seemed logical to me to make them into rings, for the wearer to examine and enjoy. Come visit these little beauties in NYC at the May ENK Accessories Circuit (trade only) or next weekend at my Trunk Show in Seattle at TWIST.

Mother Nature’s no fool!
With the cherry blossoms and daffodils in full bloom, she dusted us with snow and showered us with sleet just to remind us of who’s in charge. Here at the studio I’ve been playing with new stones for upcoming trunk shows (visit the events page to find one near you ;).
Here’s a little sample of what I’ve been working with- Brazilian Drusy Agate- they remind me of the cherry blossoms in all the graduated colors of pink. Gotta love the spring time!

Time Magazine Style & Design Issue April 09

Seattle-based designer Jamie Joseph was similarly committed to environmental issues, quietly letting her principles guide her long before eco-awareness made it to the Bergdorf Goodman crowd that’s now devoted to her work. And judging by her politics and her environmental commitment, she fits right in with the celebrities who wear Jamie Joseph on the red carpet, including Cameron Diaz and Naomi Watts. She drives a biodiesal car, uses compact fluorescent bulbs and cloth towels in the historic warehouse from which she runs her business and has been using reclaimed gold for close to a decade.

“It’s great that the whole green thing is in vogue now, but we’ve been thinking this way up here for a long time,” she says. “My husband, who’s also my business partner, has a degree in environmental science. I saw a documentary about mining years ago, and I was really disturbed. But I said, Well this is my passion-how am I going to address this? I started investigating. And there were vendors that I found where I could buy all-recycled gold.”
“Joseph also makes an effort to buy “conflict-free” gemstones-those that aren’t sold to fund wars or mined by exploited workers in unethical ways-from reliable dealers and often uses less rare, large-scale stones like rose quartz and chalcedony with tiny accents of diamonds. “We work with small owner-operated vendors that have similar beliefs and try to build a community around that,” she says. “The whole gemstone industry, it’s a little like the used-car business. You’ve got to know and trust your vendors. We make a point at least once a year of meeting face to face with people. Before I buy a stone from someone, I have to have an interview first. I want to make sure they’re not out raping the land.”

It is always an exciting day when Jeremy is cutting Peruvian Opal. I love it when this happens as little electric, blue gems start to appear from the rough blue rock. Peruvian Opal comes from the Acari copper mine near Nazca, about 460 kilometers south of Lima. Acari blue opal occurs in veins up to 5 centimeters wide that are commonly laced with brown and black dendrites. The best material is clear and transparent. This stone has a cult following and is one of my personal favorites.
